Submission Guidelines

The University of Alabama Press welcomes book proposals for scholarly and trade manuscripts that fit within our publishing program. Please peruse our website, consult our catalogs, or contact an acquisitions editor to see whether your project is a good match for our list.

To submit a book proposal, please supply the following to the appropriate acquisitions editor:

  • a cover letter
  • a prospectus including
    • a brief narrative description of your book manuscript and its main subject or area of concern, and a clear statement concerning your principal argument
    • a brief account of how your manuscript fits into recently published scholarship in your field, including, if convenient, a brief literature review
    • a discussion of its intended or anticipated audience/s
    • a tentative table of contents, ideally annotated
    • the length or anticipated length of the manuscript, in word count
    • the number or anticipated number of illustrations, if any
    • a list of 5–10 comparable titles (with author, publisher, pub year) published in the last five years
    • the names of five scholars with whom you do not have a close relationship who are qualified to comment on or peer review your work and why
    • the anticipated date of completion if your work is still in progress
    • if the book project has its origins as a dissertation, please state when and where your dissertation was completed, whether it is available online and at what URL, and how your book will differ from the dissertation
  • a curriculum vitae
  • an introduction and/or a sample chapter or two
