Intern chat-Maria

When I started my first day at the Press last Spring I honestly had no idea what to expect. Now, a little over a year later I still don’t know exactly what to expect when I come into work in the morning. What I am sure of though is this: it will be entertaining, I’ll do something probably for the first time, and I’ll know more than I did when I woke up that morning.

My internship responsibilities began with small tasks, things like filing papers and shelving books. As time went on my tasks began to include writing press releases and assisting with catalog copy.

One opportunity I’ve really enjoyed is the research I assist with at times. How many other students can complete an internship with a working knowledge of boar hunting, video games, and motorcycles? Because of the various topics covered by the Press I’ve been able to learn a great deal about topics I otherwise would not have been able to.

I’m grateful that my fantastic bosses at times asked me to work outside of my comfort zone. I hadn’t written very many press releases let alone catalog copy, never designed a newspaper ad, or even (embarrassingly enough) scanned something until I began working at the Press. My time as an intern has helped me become comfortable even when I’m completely inexperienced with what is being asked of me.

Because of my internship at the Press I feel much more prepared for my transition from student to professional. I’ve had the opportunity to gain real hands on experience that I couldn’t be more thankful for.
