Submitting a Manuscript Proposal to The University of Alabama Press

The University of Alabama Press publishes in the following areas: American history; southern history and culture; American religious history; Latin American history; American archaeology; southeastern archaeology; Caribbean archaeology; historical archaeology; ethnohistory; anthropology; American literature and criticism; rhetoric and communication; creative non-fiction; linguistics, esp. dialectology; African-American studies; Native American studies; Judaic studies; public administration; theater; natural history and environmental studies; American social and cultural history; sports history; military history; regional studies of Alabama and the southern United States, including trade titles. Submissions are not invited in poetry, fiction, or drama. The press also publishes the journals Theatre Symposium, Theatre History Studies, and Fairy Tale Review.

Special series from Alabama include Alabama: The Forge of History; Caribbean Archaeology and Ethnohistory; Classics in Southeastern Archaeology; Contemporary American Indian Studies; Deep South Books; Judaic Studies; Library of Alabama Classics; Modern and Contemporary Poetics; The Modern South; Religion and American Culture; Rhetoric, Culture, and Social Critique; and Studies in American Literary Realism and Naturalism.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal in one of the fields above, it would be most helpful if you would supply

  • a cover letter
  • a prospectus including a description of your work and its intended audience, the length or anticipated length of the manuscript, the number or anticipated number of illustrations, and the anticipated date of completion if your work is still in progress
  • a curriculum vitae


  • If available, also send

  • a table of contents
  • an introduction
  • and/or a sample chapter or two
