Field guide to imperiled amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals

Alabama is blessed with a tremendous wealth of natural resources that spans aquatic and terrestrial habitats from the Gulf beaches to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This great physical diversity produces numerous habitat types and the abundant wildlife species they support. Yet many animal populations in the state are struggling against serious threats, such as habitat loss, environmental contaminants, disease, invasive species, and overcollecting.

This volume builds on Volume I of the four-volume set by providing a closer focus on individual species of threatened amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Each entry presents the species’ common and scientific names, a detailed morphological description, full-color identification photographs and distribution maps, habitats, life history and ecological information, and the basis for each species’ level of conservation concern. It is, in one volume, a "report card" on the health of wild populations of terrestrial and selected amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, as well as a comprehensive field guide to their identification.

Ralph E. Mirarchi is former William R. and Fay Ireland Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management at Auburn University.
“Regardless of their abundance, each species is part of the gift that has been bestowed upon us. Each has its place, role, and function. As the most intelligent beings on this planet, and those capable of impacting it the most, we have been given the responsibility to allow other organisms their space and to understand their roles and functions as best we can.”
—from the foreword by Gary H. Moody, Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries
